I can still remember the old DOS days.

con is short for console. Without any editors you could copy to a file commands from the console.
As in
copy con autoexec.bat
" everything that followed here was copied into autoexec.bat. To terminate the process you pressed F6"

I believe it remained for backwards compatibility.
