yes I made an scorekeeper app , from Java and xml ,as a project.
You can also learn Android from Udacity even if you are a beginner. There are courses available for both Beginners and Intermediates

I made a small Tic Tac Toe game, I can provide you with a link to the code, but I did not upload it to Google Play. If you want I can also give you a link for apk, that you will need to move to your phone and open to install the app.

If you are looking to see the usefulness of Java, I recommend you download an app called AIDE, in it you'll see a built in running game, along with the source-code, you can even install it on your phone as an app
