How did SoloLearn generate revenue before ads?

I am relatively new to SoloLearn. Been here a little more than a week. I saw ads from the beginning of me using the app. But I have noticed many people seem to be complaining about the ads. Then i ask, How did SoloLearn even get money to maintain such a good app before ads? Was there a way to donate or something?
