What does back end and front end mean in web?

they told me that social media sites have back end and front end.

"Front end" is the casual term for client-side (so of your tags, HTML CSS and JavaScript). "Back end" is the casual term for server-side (so, of your tags, PHP). Graphics is generally thought to go best with client-side, but it depends on which aspects we're talking about.

Front end is is the look of webpage. Front end is UI by which a user can interact to it.

Back end is the process running on server when u works on a website. It is the working of a website.

Simply said, front end is the UI that user interacts with(client), and the back end is everything running on the server(server)[requests, databases and others]

Suppose you open your Facebook.

Whatever you see on the screen whether it's your profile picture, news posts, friend's information a, all these things comes under front end domain.

While the process through which you got login in Facebook or open your friend's photo or even different news posts that you see every time you reload the page, all these are done through back end.

(It's one way to think about it, but not quite that simple. There are plenty of things that can happen client-side that won't create a visual manifestation and contributes to how the website works.)
