alt stands for what will be displayed if image can't be properly displayed for whatever reason
for instance, img src="Zoka&Ela" alt "two cats" will shaw text "two cats" if the picture of Zoka and Ela is unavailable

Moeeover, alt tag for images is vutal for search engine indexing or any other machine parsing and processing of your media. Alt is like an alternative cell with the idea of image described with a help of short or long text descrption. You may gace this attribute while utilising most of cms(content management systems like wordpress etc. ).
