JavaScript has capability to manipulate HTML document and elements, including styles defined by CSS, the use of JavaScript allows the website to work dynamically and be more interactive. Recent JavaScript development also allows server side programming by Node.js, something that was not possible in its earlier years as client side scripting language. So to answer on short, JavaScript is important to learn for web developers.
