I can fill in the blanks but when I have to start from scratch I find it impossible. What point to it click and you can at least do the simple stuff?

So don't start from scratch. Modify existing programs. The more you play the easier it gets. Use all 'try it yourself' codes and change them. Grab hot or new codes and play.

Note: make sure you credit the original author and you can even publish publicly your updates.

Reading and figuring out existing codes is a really important part of your education. Every line of code needs to make sense to you. If not, ask the author or failing that ask the experts.
