I am using IntellijIDEA now and I feel more comfortable with it. Try it! Everything can be done from IDE itself. Be it Working with Database, tinkering from Command Prompt, Maven/Gradle tasks execution, RestClient etc etc.

Well Eclipse is the IDE used for java development at the university I attended, so I'm somewhat biased. It runs well on mac and pc. I've never had a problem with it lagging or crashing even though my little laptop is definitely not the best for programming. Auto completion makes it very beginner friendly. There are plenty of plug-ins as weIl, but I only have used it for basic programs, junit tests, and group git projects.

Use NetBeans and make sure its installed correctly it is the best for both novice as well as expert, even thought most of the books for beginners starts by how to program in cmd or terminal or others, but believe me it's on my personal experience I've found NetBeans most helpful and easy.
