Web Developers/Programmers: When Did You Realize You Had Enough Skill to Get/Try for a Junior Developer/Programmer Position?

To everyone here who is already working as a web developer or software developer, how did you make the leap from learner to actually working in tech? What do you think are the absolute most important characteristics and skills one must have to succeed in your area of tech? What do you wish you had known when you had first started to study programming? I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who jumped in later in life or changed their careers from something else.
