Confusing Exponentiation?

This exponentiation is confused 6**2+6
=42
Is it 42 because I thing 6*2*2+6=30
I am confused, please anyone help.
Also why 9**1/2=3.0

6**2 = 6^2 = 6*6 = 36

9**1/2 is the same as sqrt(9) (square root of 9)
