Only as far as automation via VBA. Many businesses have no idea how much time can be saved through VBA coding. I use it almost every day at work.

If you or your company (or whoever) does not work with ms office, there is no reason for it.
I would only learn it if there is a specific reason for it. Maybe it is good to be familiar with ms office if you have many text or excel files (or whatever) and you need to read their data because you need them for your program.
