At what age is it not too late to start learning programming and what personal qualities and skills are needed for this?

The good news is that programming is not only fashionable and difficult, but also extremely fun. If you learn to catch the buzz from the process, then neither age nor lack of prior training will be a hindrance along the way.

it's never too late to start learning programming.
You have to be patient and persistent, very persistent:)
Determination is important.
If you want to achieve your goal you'll find a solution if you don't you'll find an excuse

I think a mature learner with life experience is an asset. There is so much to programming that a new professional may not know about. All of which is critical to having a career. Communication skills, team work, sales, having some legal knowledge, and basic finance.

Age is not important. Being motivated is the key. Even if you don't work because you're retired due to your age, it's better because you have a lot of spare time that you could spend in your passion. For example collaborating in a gnu project.

I personally don't believe age is something to be concerned about when learning code. It's simply a new skill/hobby that anyone can pick up and enjoy doing.

It depends on the specific goal you have in mind. Of course everybody (or most) can learn to write *some* code. Set this level low enough and everybody can be a coder.

If you say a 50 year old starting from zero can compete with someone who coded from ten, studied CS and has professionally coded for ten years, then the answer may be different.

And although catching a buzz might help you staying motivated - younger people also can have buzzes.

Then there are areas that you'd have to learn that don't create that big of a buzz. What then?

Those words of Titkov, as pretty as they sound, are more a hymn than an assessment.

Yeah, coding may be a marathon and we need motivation and also some world knowledge; younger people can have all of that.

If you do it for a hobby, okay, it may be just a few evening hours, a quest to discover yourself. If you are middle-aged and have a fulltime job and a family and want to switch careers, it means sacrificing what little energy and time you have for yourself and your family, and it may still be in vain or not worth it, depending on the situation.

Don't thik about time to start the journey in programming. If you have passion and get fun from doing that stuff you are in the right time for sure.
Well, to learn programming you need a slight knowledg of mathematics and problem solving abilities as the skillset. And, you are good to go...!
