Should I start using javascript/node.js instead of php?

For starters to web development, try having a little knowledge of html and css before going to JS for front end.
Starting with php. I can't say is bad to start with but it's definitely going to hook you somewhere so leave that for now.

I highly suggest you to learn JavaScript first, it'll help you to learn basics easily for php.
