There is a huge use as well as need of these basic concepts in cyber security , you need be clear about IP and concepts related to networking like subnetting, TCP, OSI ,ARP and MAC as well.
Bdw in Security which is huge domain MAC can refer to two aspects one is through networking aspect which we call a media access control address as well as cryptographic point of view where we talk about messege authentication codes.

So In short IP and mac both has many uses and their importance can not be quantified as you are asking but you must be sound about these concepts .

So just go and dig about them , try on systems , and that will help more

the mac operates on the data link layer(layer 2) and is the link between the upper layers via the llc and the physical layer. it is involved sending frames on a LAN and converts binary data into electrical impulses to be sent on physical layer and is involved in collision detection(csma/cd) its field of operation is within a LAN. it has a mac address which can be discovered by typing ‘getmac’ on the windows command line
the ipv4 is a 32 bit address used to forward packets outside of the lan via the router to other devices on the wan. there are 5 different classes of ipv4, and they consist of two parts, the network address and the host portion which is determined by the subnetmask and the prefix length. the older ips are called ipv4, while the newer ip addresses are ipv6 which is a 128 bit address expressed as a hexadecimal numbers.
