Programming and university degree

Question

Hello guys. For the last half of the year, I'm wondering if I should continue my university degree or should I quit. I am achieving a degree in economics(my third year), but I realised that the knowledge university offers us is useless in real life.
So, my question is: is it really important to have a university degree( no matter what exactly just a degree) to apply for IT Career. And if your future employer does really care about your degree.

Some employers may think that completing the degree shows that you are committed to an end result and don't just change course according to your whims and fancies. Other gifted individuals like Bill Gates, on the other hand did not complete their college degree even if it was relevant, in order to achieve bigger and better things. I am going to tag someone who studied economics at college but is now a high achiever in the field of computing. Please welcome special guest David Carroll 👏👏👏.

Роман Кузик What an interesting situation you're in? I was in the same predicament when I discovered my passion for programming in my 3rd year of college as an Economics major. I was actually double majoring in International Studies with a minor in Japanese.

It was the most grueling last 1.5 years of college for me as I only wanted to focus on programming. I lost all interest in my other studies. But I didn't want to change majors and prolong my graduation.

I hate to say it, but I gained very little to no practical skills from college. None. I'm completely self taught as a software engineer and have been doing this professionally for 23 years.

That said, some of my best experiences were with companies that wouldn't have considered me unless I had a college degree of any kind. This isn't the case for all great jobs. But it could limit you if you don't have a 4 year degree from an accredited university.

If you just hate school and have the chops to kill it in software engineering, then maybe take your 2nd semester off and give it a try. That's actually what I did. I returned to school that summer and got caught up for my scheduled graduation date.

I don't regret finishing college. But it means so little to me. It's nothing more than a checkbox I cleared of things I felt I needed to complete so it's one less obstacle the think about in my career.

That's it. I can't tell you what to do. You might be fine without a degree or you might regret not finishing it.

If it was me all over again, knowing what I know now, I'd probably still complete it because I was so close to finishing and would likely never have a chance to finish it later. But that's just me.

Weird question, why would IT companies care if you have a degree that has nothing to do with programming, especially economy! At least a degree in math and physics would be great, but economy is just odd. I don't thini it will matter when applying for an IT job that much, but better not quit and keep it as a backup plan.
