Sure you can just use notepad, especially when just starting out learning. Once you get the basics down, then it makes sense to switch to some sort of ide, or specialized code development tool. Until then, just concentrate on learning the basics really well, that is MUCH more important than trying to figure out what code editor to use. :) Then, choose Vim of course :) :)
