Python project suggestions for IT Administration?

I learn best by doing but that meaningless activity does not really work for me. Does anyone have tips on python projects for a beginner where I could create code that performs some useful task? I have several Windows machines and can run Linux in VM, so that is my playground. I've found plenty of project lists, but they are either generic or a bunch of game ideas.

Stated another way: I'm building a foundation with this app but am lacking in knowledge to apply that to something useful, mostly because I'm unsure if python could, for example, execute a vendor provided program to read configurations from a lights out processor Ala HP iLO or Dell idrac.
