What is the best way to create a portfolio?

I would like to create a portfolio of my work to show potential employers in the future but I don't know the best way to do it. I used to do audio design and the portfolio was simple enough, get a film/game video, add my audio design then upload it to either YouTube or Vimeo and post the link. What would be the best way to showcase my programming?
