Lua, being a scripting language, usually isn't used entirely on it's own. Since the syntax is fairly straightforward, your best bet is to study the Lua of the project you wish to contribute to and go from there.

I've last touched Lua while modding a game. it was much more about learning how the game utilizes Lua than actually learning Lua by itself, which is why I recommended looking at the Lua of the project you're interested in.
