with HTML5 and JavaScript you can create some nice games. I think most of the .io-games are made like that. like splix.io or slither.io

With HTML5 you can create games. But you are using it with CSS mostly to display stuff on screen. All game logic is written in JavaScript. Using some frameworks like Note.js you can write server side of the game on JavaScript too!
