How does an average person memorize code patterns and structures.

How do actually memorize to put things together the way they are

lots of practice....by writing code... it starts to become ingrained.. where you don't have to go to google and say... "how is the done again"... or what is the format of that.... if you can remember the parts... then you can put the parts together into a program... much like you put words, such as nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, etc... to write a sentence. :)

No need of memorizing and if you understand the concept you can apply it .For example,if you learn merge sort then u can apply it by taking array of size 10 or 20 and so on....
