What makes the article tag different from div and why was the div dropped?

Div tag really makes sense to me but the article name doesn't feels right..

there is no difference. it is just a grouping element. The article tag is used to make the markup more meaningful, then just having a bunch of div tags.
So, basically, it is just used to make the markup more meaningful and structured. Technically, they work the same way.
P.S.: div tags are not dropped. They are still being used a lot.
