Data analysis is looking for patterns, trends, correlations in data, for helping managers make informed decisions, and predictions about the future. You need to have some knowledge of statistics, and for more advanced topics like machine learning, some math also.
Programming is not even required, although some languages have specialized tools for data analysis, like Python and R.
You can do this with Excel, or with visual business intelligence tools like Tableau or MS PowerBI.
