What is the "alt"

I know we use it for image in HTML but what it's mission?

Sometimes, we mistakenly provide wrong link in “src” attribute. At that image will not displayed. It will be harder time in debugging and finding where is problem. Why image is not displayed. So, we use “alt” attribute. As you know “alt” will show the letters or words which are provided to “alt” attribute. Now, we know there is wrong link provided in “src” attribute.
