You lose one exp when losing, but gain one for every questions you get right. So you will gain exp as long as you got two questions right.

The opponents don't respond because either they were online in the first place, but they switched to offline status, or they just don't respond to challenges in general.

You can try challenging everyone on JS a few of them will respond. You can still gain exp when losing.
