from beginning of my java coding i use eclipse. And many companies use it.

or intellij from jetbrains, both are used on my masters course.

I use eclipse everyday, but the 2 books I just bought are based around netbeans, so I am thinking of making the switch

Getting well acclimated with one IDE will definitely make it easier to migrate to another if needed. In my experience as a student, Eclipse is probably the most user friendly and helped me a lot when learning Java from absolute scratch. Eclipse incorporates a lot of colors in the code making it easy to jump around when writing long programs. The built-in learning function is pretty cool too. That being said - Intellij is my current favorite. It isn't free. though!
