If you are a beginner, try Google Colab. You won't need a powerful computer (because it runs on Google's servers), it is free, and it does not require any installation for environments. Fast and straight forward!

Ash if you mean best IDE, then just run python on PYCHARM. you can use full edition which is paid for or community version which is free to use. the program has a lot of advantages and it is simple to use and install modules, besides, there are thousands of videos on YouTube on how to use it. downside: it works best on 4gb ram and above though it can work even on 2gb ram but it will lag alot

I thought it was possible to run Python in Linux terminal, just like I do with my Ruby scripts.

Milo Draco is possible, since you have Python language installed in your PC. In terminal, type: python --version To confirm if you have Python installed. To runs a python script in terminal, just type: python <path_of_your_script>

Calvin Thomas personally it scales down to one thing, what are your needs when it comes to this so for me it's definitely worth it if you are a frequent developer.  PyCharm has lots of nice features - file browser, intelligent auto-completion, run in IDE with input & console windows for trial and error development. It comes with a powerful array of features to support the latest development practices, out of the box. PyCharm Community Edition offers smart code completion, code inspections, automated code refactoring, an integrated debugger, and a test runner. It makes working with large projects easy DEFINITELY WORTH IT you can download the professional version and try for 30days, if you like it, pay for it. if not then maintain community edition...
