Why do we need data to watch a video in youtube?

... In real life, the sound waves travelling from your mouth to someone else's ears allow communication to happen. This is possible because waves travel through a feasible medium, like air.

Likewise, communication between your device and a web server requires a medium. 'data' is the bits and bytes which get transferred through this medium. Sadly, unlike air (which is free), internet service providers charge a fee to transmit these data from one place to another. So essentially, when people are "buying mobile data", what they're purchasing is really the service/medium to transmit a finite amount of data from one place to another.
