Node.js is a platform that made a client-side language like javascript,to be used in back-end application purposes, something very closely similar to what PHP and other back-end languages does.
But,a client-side language dependent platform like node.js ,is not strong yet to replace a complete programming language (PHP for instance) itself..
I suggest you learn PHP and node.js both, and use them in small projects to find the differences.
I am not an expert, and This is totally my own opinion.please point out if I said anything wrong.

@Malick definitely PHP especially because i'm developing on WordPress, but it might be different for you.
If you don't want to try both of them, PHP covers the 99% of your needs and i still prefer it.
It's better in terms of documentation, you'll find much more stuff about PHP, btw there are those who think PHP is dying, take in consideration that anyone have a different point of view based on their experience.

"Comparing a Language (PHP) with an Environment (Node) is not really helpful. Compare JS with PHP it will end in “PHP is only on the Server Side and JS is on the Server and the Client Side – Point for JS”. ... But you can use PHP (Server Side) and JS(Client Side)."

@Maz thank you for the feedback, I recently started learning PHP and I'm really having fun with it, it made me understand some things that I always confused in JS...
I have also gone through a lot of articles regarding PHP and Node... So I have decided to start with PHP and I'll learn about Node too, just so I don't miss out...
As long as WordPress is alive and keeps thriving PHP will never die(just something I read).

This question is exactly where I'm currently at.. so can I ask you, which between the two of them have you found to be more useful?
