well it depend on your interest or your job.
for me, i'll do both because it complete each other.

front-end is more like html css javascript ans Sass, back-end PhP is most used with it, in general back-end is more complicated than front-end.

Back-end programming gives the programmer more power and control. If you intend to build custom web apps and/or services, you must learn PHP, Ruby-on-Rails etc. Front-end development ( primarily HTML, CSS & front-end JavaScript) is more about creating and designing websites with basic functionality.
