Generative AI for the future of programmers

Now that artificial intelligence and generative AI are mainstream among software developers and "stakeholders" what do you think is the future for junior programmers and people entering the field?

These tools can help automate repetitive tasks and simplify coding. Instead of being scared, you should see it as a smart companion. Learning to work with these technologies will make you more efficient and creative. Plus, starting to program has never been more accessible So, even though AI is changing the game, there are plenty of opportunities for newcomers to shine in this field.

Marcelino Arias I mean it is the kind of job junior developers do isn't it ? Like 10 years into the future teams of developers will be getting smaller and smaller

Yes of course. Like with every technologies. We can dig massives holes, or carry lots of weights in no time, zero effort, with only one person, or very few. Before oil, or steam. Jobs were harder and very repetitive. Now and as long as AI can’t actually think, and is a machine, then yes. We’ll only really need specialized and qualified people mostly. To do the actual Hard Work. For the repetitive tasks. AI will replace intern and temp workers

Daniel Silva The most used AI tool used by developers would probably be auto completion. Making code faster to write, getting rid of the long syntax. Generation of code is not at the level to replace junior jobs. At this time it's more concerning with artists, where loading screens, logos, textures, etc... are created with image generation. Although as that becomes more mainstream, it becomes less unique so artists still shine (and a knowledgeable artist can utilize these tools more effectively than a programmer). As for the future, I think it's fine. As long as developers are needed there will be a need for junior developers as trainees. And realistically speaking, developers will always be needed regardless of how many AI breakthroughs there are, since they need to create & maintain the AI.

d4m So, what motivates you to learn programming? For me, it's just because it's fun, but I'd like to know the reasons of other people who are also starting to learn or understand the path they plan to take.
