lisandra jardines So basically Leet sometimes stylized as 1337 in modern day is just a fun way to stylize words. It’s done with usernames very oftenly if your original username is taken. For instance Lisandra as L1sandra or Lis4ndra would be a simple variant.

It’s not as common anymore except as a joke mainly in programmer/“hacker” spaces. But it used to be pretty common back in the day on WoW and Quake, etc.

It actually originated within hacker communities in the 1980s (think old hacker networks like the 414s, LOD, L0pht, cDc, et cetera), to bypass filters (still used in modern day for instance someone may type @$ instead of, well you get the idea) and obscure messages from outsiders who don’t understand.

Eventually later it was done to make their “content” less “Googleable” or for their time “Archie-able” lol. Basically making it impossible for outsiders to find their FTP files with keyword-based crawling. Also it was done on some h4x0r Usenets & BBSs.

And yes very true, in modern day “standard” leet is quite easy to read by humans and AI alike, however unorthodox and advanced leet still is useful in bypassing low quality word filtering systems on for instance chatrooms and the like (hackers don’t really use it anymore). For instance:

Hello < h3ll0 < |-|€|_L0 < |-|£|_LØ
Leet < 1337 < |_€€7 < |_££~|~

All still readable to the trained eye but in varying scales.

Standard text -> basic leet -> advanced leet -> advanced leet with symbols which may or not be available to you (this final level will usually bypass AI, especially if it is long enough and if you throw a few unique cases like n’s are |\\| instead of just |\|. Make t’s ~|~ instead of just + and x’s could be }{ instead of ><.

Or if it’s leet for a different language like привет (hello) being |\\|.|>|\\|.|33~|~, et cetera)

with today's AI, bypassing filters using this technique would be even harder. If AI can read inverted foreign language words in images, a simple 1337 would be a breeze.
Then there is that old calculator trick where you enter 07734, invert it and read hELLO.
