Look at the uva onlinejudge site and practice there. Also you should know a whole number of standard algorithms, otherwise you are probably not going very far.
A class on algorithmic discrete mathematics, where they teach all these useful graph algorithms, is probably the best foundation. Numerics, randomised algorithms and computer algebra also are useful occasionally.

really i think "just get into it" there are somany free competitions all you have to do is join just make sure your comfortable with your language.
