I want to have a career dealing with computers and programming but I also don't want it to take over my free time, or basically my life.

I love computer science and programming and don't want it to "kill" me in life, can their be other jobs that include some coding and technology?

You must have strong interested in programming. Take up most of your free time learn programming. Learn it whenever wherever you are.
Then you will have a rewarding career in programming later.

If you can't commit it, I guess programming job is not for you.
