Learning how things work "under the hood" is proper and best way to understand hacking. Using one-click tools that someone else scripted to "hack" something doesn't make you hacker. Hacker is someone that knows how things work, and finds the way to take adventage of it, or to stop someone from taking adventage of it by patching or reporting that flaw.

So I advise you to start reading books about how networks and operating systems work, along with those hacking tutorials.
