@James well, without GNU and the free software foundation Linux may not even be free now: ever thought about that?
edit: and for sure it wouldn't be what it is now. Same goes for the open source concept.

Yes Linux is a free OS!
if you want to learn hacking i recommend Kali Linux! but it is not easy! u need to do a lot through the console like in DOS!
if you just want to try Linux i recommend Ubuntu which is more User friendly! you can download it for free!

edit: you can try them in a virtual machine using VMware!
