It works in two stages:
1. The cracker uses a virus to compromise and 'own' the computer of as many peolpe as he/she can.
2. After deciding who is the target (normally a website) of the attack it makes all the compromised computers send multiple request to it.
If the server is not prepared to respond to the attack it can freeze trying to respont to all the request and is unable to answer legitimate
requests. (hence the name Distributed Denial Of Service)

Its so senseless: if you decide to DDOS and you can actually compromise other systems, you should have more skill than DDOS requires (which is close to zip)
