Why is Center not supported in gradient?

Is it hard to make the "center" value work for gradient? I understand it is not part of CSS3 but could it be part? Why not?

It could not be, because if it would start in the middle, where would it go? Would it spread like a Radial Gradient or would one side be empty? You can still make it synmetrical.
