My following answer will apply to all languages based on what I learned from my mentors. How much time you will need to be able to get a job as a dev is entirely up to you. You can get a job and learn on the job or you can start your career off by building yourself a portfolio. All of this depends on how fast you can learn and what aspect do you want to do. Knowing how to program alone does not get you a job that starts a career. You need soft skills and more importantly, knowledge on how to market yourself. For instance, if you market yourself well, you can get a job with just knowledge on how to print out "Hello world!".

10,000 hours! :) look up Peter Norvig's post on the matter. He is Google's chief scientist and a great programmer.

@Venkatesh Pitta Scientist or not, how could Mr. Norvik possibly arrive at this number?

That's a really vague question... Where are you hoping to go with your programming career? And this isn't always true, but, depending on your project, Java isn't gonna be enough by itself to buy you a career
