What engine should i choose for making games?

I heard that unreal engine 4 and unity are the best free engines.Do you have any suggestions?

in my little experience, I advice you to choose unity it is free and you can make 2D and 3D games also there is a large community that use it.
about the person who told you choose gamemaker, I have a other opinion, I use it for two years, after that the version 2 came out this year I stopped using it because the prices are crazy so high for me for just a 2D game engine.

probably unity is the best start for an indie dev like you. gamemaker can be a good choice too, but do so reluctantly as it's only good for 2D.
