what is the purpose of using <div>? anybody?

This question should be in html lessons not css.
but in general, it used to divide the page to sections and use its own css style, like when using tables.

the practice of using tables to create section is outdated now.. so div are used to create header aside footer etc. which also have there own nomenclature in html 5
