<br/> and "colspan"in tables

can anyone explain me what is the purpose of <br/> and "colspan" in the given example ?

The <br> element is used to insert a line break..Thus the code have got the right position and looks good..
and the colspan attribute defines the number of columns a cell should span..the perpose of colspan is to define the number of columns spanned by an individual column definition.
