Which software is used for creating front ends for Java applications ? Is an ide like netbeans alone is enough to create my own Java application ?

Probably yes. Netbeans has got all the necessary stuff to get you building apps but for Desktop and J2MEE and other similar hardware platforms as far as I know. But it still depends on your necessity and comfort, what kind of Java application are you developing and are you ok with the facilities provided by Netbeans for your needs.
