Although it is horribly outdated in Form of Java versions I still enjoyed head first Java quite a bit, because key functionality and oop concepts are rather universal for Java and that's the tricky part of learning a programming language.

The rest is just learning vocabulary.

Same reason why every additional language you learn gets easier to pick up as you gain a deep understanding of thinking like a programmer and know roughly what to expect, so you just have to learn language specific concepts and then syntax but by that time you have the hardest part already behind you, which is understanding programming as an overall concept.
