How to get data from jList and then process it ?

Question

As a new to programming but,
Here is the situation - I am fetching some information from database (enquiries) and displaying it on jList.

What I expect -
1) user will select any item from a List, (suppose use selected item no 2, which displays information of enquiryId = 5)
2) on click of update information in enquiryId = 5 should get updated.

Where I am stuck at -
I don't know how to get enquiryId from jList which is selected by the user.
