Where is the BEST place to work as a software dev?

Question

I'm hoping to work abroad a little once I get through college, but where is the absolute best place to go? I've heard japan is good (thinking Sony and Ubisoft) so I'm learning Japanese, but I want to know if this is the best possible option. thx in advance! :)

Depends what you want to do. If you're focused on gaming (which it sounds like it), then you're basically just picking whichever company you personally like the most (For myself, I'd work for Bethesda, Ubi, or Valve). Each of these companies are located wherever they felt like being, so there isn't one area that's better than the next really, it just depends where the company you want to work for is located.

With that being said, I think the BEST place to work is from home or from my own office. I'd much rather create my own company and do it how I want than work making someone else's dream come true. As such, my personal "best place to work" would be in Colorado, USA at my own office / house.

PS - Ubisoft Montreal is the better branch of Ubisoft, just sayin. :D That's in Canada. (they're the branch that created Siege)

I spent a few months working in Japan for my US based company installing, testing, and limited training for our software/hardware voicemail system to their telephone switch. I found it extremely cool being there. My favorite trip for that was to Australia.

@Netkos Ent wow i appreciate the thought that went in your answer! I agree that home is best! I'm just wondering where my 'home' should be based on living conditions, economy, etc if that makes sense.

@Hannah T Are you seeking to work in the gaming industry? If not, what's your overall dream/goal that you're trying to accomplish? There are many other questions to ask first before you decide on the where. How you answer the questions is how you should best assess where you should be located.

@John That's awesome! :D I've always wanted to go to Japan. I'm a big fan of their culture/history and also a huge fan of the animation they create.

Netkos, I'm a huge fan of the food. The respect they give is something this country has misplaced. Their hardware and software development is impressive, given we started it and have 3 times the people living here.

@Netkos Ent I'm not positive yet, but I'm leaning toward gaming, either app or video game-based since I also like doing graphic design. I may also do web dev on the side. My dream is working for a big company that values its employees, especially if a game has dance in it (another passion of mine)

If you are talking about working conditions you should have a look at the company and not specifically the area where the company's place you will work at is located, this would refer to living conditions.
