I agree with @Dima, and I think it applies to most fields you might go into : if you wanna build your own project or company, you just need to know what you're doing ( although a degree could help with credibility if you need investors ). If you wanna get hired in a regular job, a degree would help UNLESS you do have prior experience and success in the field to show. I think the same dynamic would apply for freelancing. Anyhow, here are some ressources to get a good education with or w/o degrees, low/no cost, your own schedule ... http://www.openculture.com/freeonlinecourses#Computer Science Courses https://www.ted.com/talks/shai_reshef_a_tuition_free_college_degree www.coursera.org www.stackoverflow.com https://redditfavorites.com/books/programming/ https://www.42.us.org/ https://www.appacademy.io/ https://www.sololearn.com/discuss/510275/?ref=app https://www.gamasutra.com www.freecodecamp.org www.w3schools.com www.codewars.com https://www.sololearn.com/discuss/459759/?ref=app

There are a lot of stories about people without degree achieving a grate results, apart from fact that it is really rare situations. In most cases no degree = no good job. If you have no idea what you want to achieve, like ideas for business or passion about something, you probably need to have degree. And also you can quit uni whenever you want...

A degree from a good place is a proof that you achieved a level of competence. it makes it easier for a company to consider your application. without a degree you need to find other ways to prove that not only you have the technical competences, but also the ability to apply yourself to a long term goals, build knowledge of collaborating with peers,. had a chance to experiment with a mix of techniques and learn theory. which is not easy without references.
