i use matlab as an instrumentation engineer. you can do a lot of things there. i remember back in 2006 i made an intelligent fire alarm system (with neural networks) in matlab and then implemented a c code from there to labview. this thing still running and learned a lot!

primary for numerical analysis, but its being replaced by python(slowly but still).
