ML is now. IoT was supposed to be the last couple of years but hit a few snags. They both have a good future. If you look today ML is winning. I can't say with certainty that will be the case 5 years out. Honestly what the 4th industrial revolution is about is integration of all these advances. Don't quit with just one skill set. Branch out as you can afford it.

1) Machine learning is a tool to make autonomous systems. If you think that whatever you are doing in your area of interest can be automated, that currently requires you writing hard-code to get the results, which are not great, you can use machine learning to avoid that hard-coding everywhere. 2) Machine learning will require you reading linear algebra, probability and calculus at the very least.

I personally believe you should focus on Machine Learning. ML, as @Divyaraj Yadav stated, can be made autonomous and doesn't require hardcoding anything that influences the output. I definitely suggest you look into neural networks and learn about them. At first they're very intimidating although as you research I'm sure you'll find them to be less and less complicated. Also, I've never used iot so I can't really help you with that. I suggest using Python for writing ML code. Preferably Jupyter which is extremely useful.

I think machine learning will be of more use in the far and near future

IoT and automation are just the beginning. 10 years later, they will be extremely ordinary. But Machine Learning will increase demand extensively. Plus, you can use your machine learning skills in Big Data Analytics, which has a whole wide world opened in the past few years.
