What do I need to know to become a web developer?

Please, be more specific. I'll assume you're talking about becoming a web developer for a company.

Depending on the company, they have their own requirements and prerequisites for those applying for a web master (developer) position.

For example, a company may require you have a master's degree in Computer Science or another field or they may require 3+ years of experience.

Almost all professional web development jobs will require you have a degree of some kind or experience. Knowing the language itself is not enough although it definitely is required.

My personal suggestion is you do research on what most web master positions require and complete every requirement. You should start off making your own small sites with a domain of your own that you can include in a portfolio.
